Whether
you are considering a visit to First Presbyterian Church or have
already stopped by the church, we want to welcome you with open arms
and let you know there is always a place for you at FPCPJ. We hope this
site will answer a few
common questions you may have about the church, our worship services,
and our beliefs, but please feel free to call us at the church if you
have any questions - we would love to talk with you. The church phone
number is 845-856-1231.
Is
the worship service traditional or contemporary?
On
September 9,
2007 FPCPJ will introduce a new worship structure that seeks to
accomodate the variety of ways that people give all praise, honor and
glory to God. At 10:15 am the congregation will gather for a family
friendly liturgy that includes children's bible stories, a hands on
lesson, and contemporary songs with simple melodies.
At 10:45 the congregation will transition into its traditional liturgy
with a time of welcome and announcements. At 11:00 am the traditional
liturgy will begin and includes singing from the Presbyterian Hymnal,
responsive readings, drama, a traditional sermon and special music from the choir.
In December, during the season of Advent, a contemplative liturgy will
be added. This 45 minute liturgy will include sung prayers from Taize
(France) and the Iona community (Scotland) and in place of a sermon
there will be 10-15 minutes of silent meditation. This liturgy will
being at 9:30 am and transition into the family liturgy at 10:15.
Recognizing that one worship service does not fit all people, we have
attempted to develop three unique liturgies in one extended service.
Come for one or come for all.
Please
be aware that First Presbyterian Church was built in a residential
neighborhood before the invention of the automobile. Therefore, FPCPJ
does not have a parking lot. Fortunately, there is plenty of on street
parking around the church. In addition, there are two parking spots
designated for handicap parking - one on Sussex Street and the other on
North Broome Street (directly in front of the church).
Anything
from a suit and tie to a favorite pair of jeans. FPC is a diverse
congregation and everyone is encouraged to be themselves.
